Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional golf career — but he’s not slowing down. After winning the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam, claiming the Irish Open, and helping Team Europe to a Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil, McIlroy was named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. Yet, the 36-year-old says he’s still hungry: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”
One goal? A record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title, which would match Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Touch wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, of course, was asked for more thoughts there too.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is making another push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution,” Immelman said. “They’ve committed to 72-hole events and plan to expand their fields. There’s a chance.”
Immelman emphasized that OWGR is about meritocracy: “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s what we’re helping LIV understand.”
Luke Donald Thanks Fans After Team of the Year Win
Golf had a big night at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. Not only did McIlroy break a long-standing drought for the sport, but Team Europe was also named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy shared the moment with teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while captain Luke Donald and others chimed in via social media to thank fans for the honor.
