Spain’s top junior golfers compete for U18 title at Golf Los Lagos. Fernando Cobo leads after two rounds in challenging conditions.
The Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG) organized an eventful March 2026 calendar featuring multiple national championships and significant youth competitions, showcasing Spain’s commitment to developing the next generation of elite golfers.
The centerpiece of the month was the Campeonato de España Sub 18 Masculino, held from March 29 to April 1 at Golf Los Lagos in Pinseque, Zaragoza. One hundred eight young golfers competed for the title, following in the footsteps of legendary Spanish champions. Jon Rahm, who won the championship in 2010 and 2012, remains the tournament’s most celebrated alumnus, alongside Alejandro del Rey (2015, 2016) and David Puig.
Cobo Leads Challenging Conditions
After two rounds, Fernando Cobo from Castellón held the lead at three-over-par (69-78), demonstrating remarkable consistency on a course that proved demanding for the entire field. The course’s difficulty became evident as no competitor managed to post a sub-par round, forcing players to grind through challenging conditions.
Cobo’s narrow advantage placed him just one stroke ahead of four players from Andalusia, with Martín Cervera leading the chasing group at four-over-par. The tight leaderboard suggested a competitive final two rounds with multiple contenders capable of capturing the title.
Defending champion Yago Horno competed in the field as players pursued one of Spain’s most prestigious junior titles, a championship that has consistently produced professional talent competing at the highest levels of international golf.
National Youth Development Program Expands
Beyond the U18 championship, the RFEG continued its robust youth development strategy with the announcement of the Pro Spain Team 2026. The federation selected 22 of Spain’s most promising young players for the 17th edition of the promotion program, underscoring the organization’s investment in cultivating future champions.
This systematic approach to talent identification reflects the RFEG’s long-term vision of producing world-class competitors. The program’s success is evident in the trajectory of players like Rahm and Puig, who emerged from Spain’s competitive amateur ranks to achieve sustained success on professional DP World Tour and international circuits.
The RFEG also organized additional national competitions during March, including the Copa de S.M. La Reina (March 3-8) at La Reserva Club de Sotogrande in Cádiz, an international amateur women’s event won by Denmark’s Sarah Skovgaard Bils. The Campeonato de España Masculino Pitch & Putt on March 5 saw José María Ortiz de Pinedo deliver a dominant performance.
The March edition of the RFEG’s digital magazine highlighted the Pro Spain Team initiative, featured veteran golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez‘s fourth-place finish at the Staysure Marbella Legends, and included an interview with professional Azahara Muñoz, reflecting the federation’s commitment to covering development pathways alongside established professional achievements.
