McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year, Eyes More Milestones Ahead

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who in 2025 completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped secure a Ryder Cup victory on foreign soil. He also hinted at chasing an eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, always in the spotlight, engaged with media there as well.

McIlroy’s TGL Plans and Team Update

Looking ahead, McIlroy is set to debut with Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) on January 2. He confirmed the addition of 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen as a substitute for the team, which includes Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan and me for our first match,” McIlroy explained.

OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’

LIV Golf continues its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. Immelman emphasized the importance of meritocracy in golf: “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our talks.”

Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a long drought for golf since Nick Faldo’s 1989 honor. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald shared his thanks on social media.
