McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year, Eyes More Achievements Ahead

Will LIV Golf get OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding, and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional golf career by being named Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” McIlroy stated after a season that included a Masters victory completing his career Grand Slam, a win at the Irish Open, and a triumphant Ryder Cup performance in Europe. He also hinted at chasing an eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where he also shared his thoughts with the media.

LIV Golf and OWGR: ‘There is a chance’

LIV Golf is making another push to be included in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to move to 72-hole events and expand its field, aligning more with traditional tour structures. “The OWGR is about meritocracy. You have to earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our talks,” Immelman added.

Luke Donald Thanks Fans After Team of the Year Win

McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a long-standing drought for golf, the last winner being Nick Faldo in 1989. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald expressed his gratitude via social media.
