Rory McIlroy battles back on the back nine to reclaim the lead heading into the final round at Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy has taken the solo lead at The Masters after an eventful stretch on the back nine at Augusta National. The defending champion demonstrated his trademark resilience on Thursday, navigating a mixed run of results over his final six holes to edge ahead of the field.

A Rollercoaster Finish to Round Three

McIlroy’s closing stretch at Augusta proved anything but straightforward. Playing holes 13 through 18, the Northern Irishman recorded a birdie, then suffered a double bogey, followed by a bogey to level par on the difficult back nine. However, he showed composure down the stretch, posting consecutive birdies to finish strong and claim the outright lead heading into Friday’s final round.

The 34-year-old’s ability to recover from the double bogey highlighted the mental toughness required to compete at Augusta, where momentum can shift quickly among the treacherous greens and undulating terrain.

McIlroy in Position for Second Green Jacket

Having won the green jacket in 2025, McIlroy is now positioned to capture his second Masters title. His position at the top of the leaderboard gives him control of the tournament as the field heads into the decisive final round on Friday.

The defending champion’s performance so far has reinforced his status as one of the favorites at Augusta, and his solo lead offers him the opportunity to join an elite group of multiple Masters champions.
