Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career, but the 36-year-old isn’t slowing down. After being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year—thanks to a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory and a Ryder Cup triumph—McIlroy made his intentions clear: “I don’t know how I’ll top 2025, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.” One such goal? An eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free and the motivation is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was asked for more thoughts.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is making renewed efforts to gain Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. Trevor Immelman, OWGR board chairman since April, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil—even exchanging messages during the PNC Championship. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. Immelman emphasized the importance of meritocracy: “You earn your place on a tour and fight to keep it. That’s the essence of our sport. We’ve worked with LIV to help them understand this perspective.”
Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude
McIlroy’s night at the SPOTY awards was doubly sweet. Not only did he break a long-standing golf drought by winning the individual honor, but Team Europe, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the team award alongside Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald shared his thanks on social media.
