McIlroy Eyes More After ‘Sports Personality’ Honor

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s goals, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off a stellar 2025 with the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award, but the Northern Irishman isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said the 36-year-old, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped Team Europe to a Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil. One goal? An eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside in Miami at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight, where he also spoke to media.

McIlroy and TGL: New Season, New Faces

McIlroy is set to return to action on January 2 with Boston Common in the second season of the TGL. He confirmed that 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen will join the team as a substitute for Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, who will be in Japan and Australia respectively. “Michael will team up with Keegan [Bradley] and me for our first match,” McIlroy said.

OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’

LIV Golf is pushing once again for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to move to 72-hole events and expand its field. “The OWGR is a meritocracy — you earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s what we’ve been communicating to LIV,” Immelman added.

Donald’s Thanks as Team of the Year

In addition to McIlroy’s individual honor, Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year at the SPOTY awards. McIlroy accepted the trophy alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while the rest of the team joined virtually. Captain Donald shared his gratitude on social media.
