Here’s a look at one of the cleanest holes from my round at PGA West! Navigate a challenging par 5 with precision and strategy.
The 5th hole at PGA West is a demanding par 5 that requires careful navigation around two water hazards stretching the length of the hole. Choosing the right club off the tee is crucial to avoid trouble and set up a scoring opportunity.
Strategic Tee Shot with the 1-Iron
In this round, the player opted for a 1-iron off the tee. This choice was deliberate to clear the first water hazard while staying short of the second. The tee shot was executed perfectly, landing in an ideal position that allowed for a solid approach.
Approach Shot and Putting
From 205 yards out, a 48-degree wedge was used to hit an approach shot right at the pin. The ball landed about 40 feet short of the hole, which left a challenging long putt. The player managed to lag the 40-foot putt to within 4 feet, then confidently rolled in the short putt for a birdie.
Lessons on Distance Control
While the tee shot was well managed, the player acknowledged the need to improve distance control on approach shots. Leaving the ball 40 feet short is not ideal, and sharpening this skill is a priority ahead of the season start at the end of February.
Overall, this hole showcases the importance of strategic club selection and precise execution, especially on a course as challenging as PGA West.
