Gary Woodland holds one-shot lead entering final round of Houston Open with Masters berth and first victory in seven years on the line.
Gary Woodland will take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, seeking his first professional victory since capturing the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 2019.
Woodland shot a solid 5-under 65 in the third round to reach 18-under par, moving him ahead of Nicolai Højgaard of Denmark, who carded an impressive 9-under 63 to sit at 17-under. The Danish golfer closed with four consecutive birdies to remain in contention heading into Monday’s finale.
Min Woo Lee and share third place at 12-under par, four shots back of the lead.
Seven Years Without Victory
The 54-hole lead represents Woodland’s first such position since his memorable victory at Pebble Beach, when he claimed the second major championship of his career. The American’s drought in the winner’s circle has tested his resilience, making this week’s opportunity particularly significant.
Woodland’s performance on Saturday showcased the composure required down the stretch. He secured separation from the field with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, providing breathing room heading into Sunday’s final 18 holes.
Masters Qualification Implications
The Houston Open carries added significance for several players in the field, with PGA Tour members using this week as a final opportunity to secure or solidify their positions for the Masters Tournament, scheduled to begin in less than two weeks.
For Woodland, a victory would not only end a seven-year drought but also guarantee his return to Augusta National. The 36-year-old’s pursuit of that elusive second tournament victory continues Monday at Memorial Park Golf Club in Houston.
