Rory McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year, Eyes More in 2026

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s big year, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career, but the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. After being named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, McIlroy declared: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”

His 2025 season included a Masters win to complete the career Grand Slam, a victory at the Irish Open, and a triumphant Ryder Cup campaign. Next on his radar: a record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record. “I still feel I’ve got a few good years left. Touch wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, which ended in a double jaw fracture for Paul. Naturally, McIlroy was asked about his plans there too.

OWGR and LIV Golf: A New Hope?

The LIV Golf League is making another push to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field size. “The OWGR is about meritocracy,” Immelman added. “You have to earn your place on a tour and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our conversations.”

Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy wasn’t the only one honored at the SPOTY awards. Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad, victorious at Bethpage Black, was named Team of the Year. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his thanks on social media, representing the team’s appreciation for the recognition.
