Will LIV Golf get OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional golf career, but the 36-year-old is far from satisfied. After securing the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award—thanks to a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph—McIlroy made it clear: he’s not done yet. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still so much more to achieve,” he said. One goal? Matching Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was asked about his plans and shared more insights.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
The LIV Golf League is once again pushing for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil—even during the PNC Championship. “Scott, our board, and I are working closely to find a solution. And I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV’s move to 72-hole events and plans to expand its field are seen as steps in the right direction. “The OWGR is a meritocracy. You earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s what makes our sport compelling,” Immelman added.
Luke Donald Thanks Fans After Team of the Year Win
At the same SPOTY awards, McIlroy wasn’t the only golfer honored. The European Ryder Cup team, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year following their away victory at Bethpage Black. McIlroy lifted a second trophy that night, joined by teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others tuned in via social media. Donald expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt message to fans and teammates.
