Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career with a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph on foreign soil. Yet, the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. After being named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, McIlroy declared, “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still so much more to achieve.”
Among his goals: an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, naturally, was asked about his plans for the upcoming season.
McIlroy and TGL: Boston Common Debut
McIlroy’s next appearance is set for January 2 with Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL). He confirmed that 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen will serve as a substitute for teammates Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who will be abroad. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan [Bradley] and me,” McIlroy explained.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf’s quest for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points has taken a new turn. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field, aligning more with traditional tour structures. “Golf is a meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our discussions.”
Team of the Year: Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup Squad
McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a decades-long drought for golf, with the last winner being Nick Faldo in 1989. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year for their victory at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude on social media, representing the team’s appreciation.
