Between dramatic views and tactical challenges: the Hills Course prepares for its European golf spotlight.
When the DP World Tour Qualifying School Final Stage returned to INFINITUM in November, the spotlight once again turned to the Lakes and Hills Courses—an ambitious, topographically rich layout above Spain’s Costa Dorada currently undergoing a major transformation. Known for its steep climbs, long transitions, and strategic vistas, the Hills Course is midway through a two-phase renovation. The revamped back nine has already reopened and hosted its first professional competition this year.
A Course in Transition
Led by Dave Sampson of European Golf Design, who has shaped numerous tour venues, the back nine has been completely overhauled since January. The goal: to establish the Hills Course as a premier European golf destination.
Key changes include new tees and a redesigned green complex at the 10th hole, directional adjustments to holes 15 and 16 for improved flow, and a 30% reduction in bunkers. In their place, maintenance-friendly Zoysia grass has been introduced, significantly lowering water and chemical usage.
While the design evolves, the terrain remains a challenge. Long, hilly transitions make golf carts essential for many players. The reward: breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the Prades Mountains, and the Llaberia Nature Reserve. Occasionally, the scenery is interrupted by nearby development and roads, a minor blemish on an otherwise idyllic setting.
Dramatic Finishing Hole
The course’s new identity is most evident at the 18th hole, now a dramatic island-style green set within a natural quarry. The striking rock wall behind the green creates a theatrical backdrop, making for a memorable finish.
Precision is key: the shot over water offers little forgiveness, especially under tournament conditions like those of Q-School. This blend of visual drama and strategic pressure highlights the course’s new tournament-ready character.
In everyday play, the Hills Course remains fair but challenging. Blind shots and tight lines demand clear decision-making.
With the back nine complete, the course stands at a turning point. Renovation of the front nine is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with full modernization expected by 2026. Already, the Hills Course signals its future: visually stunning, strategically demanding, and more sustainable.
DP World Tour Q-School Trust
The Q-School Final Stage is one of professional golf’s toughest formats: 108 holes, 156 players, only 20 tour cards. INFINITUM has now hosted the event seven times and recently signed a new three-year partnership, underscoring the tour’s trust in the venue.
This year’s edition featured standout performances, with Zander Lombard dominating at 37-under-par to secure his tour card. In total, 20 players earned their place on the DP World Tour for 2026.
A Versatile Golf Resort
Beyond tournament golf, INFINITUM positions itself as a full-scale lifestyle resort. Its award-winning beach club, modern dining options, and growing portfolio of luxury real estate complement its three golf courses—Lakes, Hills, and the historic Ruins Course.
