Transformation at the Top: INFINITUM’s Hills Course Evolves

Between dramatic views and tactical tests: the Hills Course is preparing for its role on Europe’s golfing stage.

When the DP World Tour Qualifying School Final Stage returned to INFINITUM in November, attention once again turned to the Lakes and Hills Courses—two challenging, topography-driven layouts above the Costa Dorada. Currently undergoing a two-phase renovation, the Hills Course is halfway through its transformation. The revamped back nine has already reopened and hosted professional competition for the first time this year.

Hills Course Renovation

Led by Dave Sampson of European Golf Design, who has shaped several tour venues, the back nine has been redesigned since January with the goal of establishing the Hills Course as a premier European destination. Key changes include new tees and a completely remodeled green complex at the 10th hole, reoriented layouts at holes 15 and 16 for improved flow, and a 30% reduction in bunkers. Maintenance-friendly Zoysia grass now replaces many sand traps, significantly reducing water and chemical use.

While the design is becoming more modern, the terrain remains a challenge: long and hilly transitions make golf carts essential for many players. The reward is stunning views of the Mediterranean, the Muntanyes de Prades mountains, and the Llaberia nature reserve. Occasionally, nearby buildings and roads interrupt the scenery, a minor drawback in an otherwise idyllic setting.

Signature Finishing Hole

The transformation is most dramatic at the 18th hole, now redesigned in the style of an island green. Set within a natural quarry, the dramatic rock wall behind the green creates a theatrical finale. The hole demands precision, especially under tournament conditions like those at Q-School. This blend of visual drama and strategic pressure highlights the course’s tournament-ready character.

In regular play, the Hills Course remains fair but challenging, with blind shots and narrow lines requiring decisive play. With the back nine complete, the course is at a turning point. Renovation of the front nine is scheduled to begin in late 2025 and conclude in 2026. Already, the direction is clear: a visually striking, technically demanding, and more sustainable golf experience.

The neighboring Lakes Course, which underwent its own major renovation in 2023, once again hosted the final rounds. Together, the Hills and Lakes Courses form a duo praised by players and officials for their consistently high maintenance standards.

DP World Tour Qualifying School

The Q-School Final Stage is one of the toughest formats in professional golf: 108 holes, 156 players, only 20 tour cards. INFINITUM hosting the event for the seventh time and signing a new three-year partnership underscores the tour’s confidence in the venue. This year’s edition featured standout performances, including Zander Lombard’s record-setting 37-under-par victory to secure his tour card. In total, 20 players earned their place on the DP World Tour for 2026.

Beyond tournament golf, INFINITUM continues to position itself as a comprehensive lifestyle resort. Its award-winning beach club, modern dining options, and growing selection of premium real estate are as much a part of its identity as its three golf courses—Lakes, Hills, and the historic Ruins Course.
